Thanksgiving... my favorite holiday
Why? Because it’s focused on good food, good family and thinking about all the good things we have to be thankful for. I know it’s a bit late to do a Thanksgiving post, but I was traveling all weekend to Chicago with no laptop, no editing software and let’s be honest, no real drive to blog when visiting with family and friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. I’m...

what to wear to your company holiday party
The holidays are upon us (Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I’m sooooo excited!!!). What this means for many of us who work at companies lucky enough to still be able to throw an employee or even a client/employee holiday party, is that we have to decide what to wear to such an event. This can be tricky because although this is meant to be a night of reward, fun and celebration, we are still...

the ultimatum shirt is back...
I figured if I could wear it twice in two weeks, it’s definitely worth keeping (you can see how I wore it before, here). And, I really like it with the vest so I’m re-sold on it. This was Friday’s outfit and I was having a bit of a day… can you tell?
I felt much better after this one :-)

DVF, give me your curves!
I think I got the most comments ever from post about my $110 HousingWorks DVF jacket find. Well, I’m wearing it again, but this time rather than wrapping the scarf portion all the way around my neck, I’ve left the jacket slightly open and tied the scarf in a loose knot hanging down. Oh how I love the versatility! Also, instead of pairing it with pants, I’ve paired it with...

Happy Birthday to you....
To Jay, who turned 28 yesterday. We celebrated with steaks, creamed spinach, roasted potatoes and chocolate mousse cake. We made the first three; bought the mousse. Oh yeah, and drank Johnnie Walker Black Label on the rocks, which our British friend sent Jay as a bday gift. So lovely! Thanks Robert for the awesome Scotch!

styling that hard-to-style item
I bought this skirt a month or two ago for $4.50 at Housing Works and knew that although it fit nicely and was a fun little item, it could be a challenge to find ways to make it look classy rather than cheesy. Why?
the colors - red, white and blue are tricky to coordinate without looking matchy matchy or like you’re gearing up for a fourth of July party.
the fabric - it’s mostly...

if the shoe fits, wear it
And that’s what I did with these AMAZING shoes, which are actually my roommate Laura’s and the second pair of heels I’ve borrowed from her to match this particular dress. Which brings me to my theory on roommates: only live with people with whom you can share clothes, jewelry and shoes :-) Laura is actually the first roommate I’ve had who is the same shoe size as me, and...

the ultimatum: wear it or give it up
I’ve had this NY & Co. blouse for several years (like 4 maybe?) and it’s been sitting in my closet unworn for the past 3. Last month, I gave myself an ultimatum: either find a way to wear it or give it away.
The thing is, I really like the blouse… there’s just something about it that doesn’t sit right or looks odd when it’s actually on. But, I put this...

DIY vest from trim scraps idea - so awesome!!! →
You have to check out this DIY vest that Joelle from the owls are not what they seem made from a t-shirt and some scrap ruffles, fringe, and other trim. I absolutely have to try making myself one of these, as it looks relatively simple but gives so many outfits a ton of flare. Go Joelle!

revitalize: how to shimmer and shine at work
Add some tweed so you don’t look like you’re going to a Holiday party or worse, a nightclub. At the office, it’s all about balance. If you want to wear something that’s got some sparkle or shine or that’s a tad funky, make sure the rest of your outfit has more traditional elements so that you’re not completely overdoing it.
I’ve owned this blouse for...

black, white and suited up
I really like this suit and I think it actually looks better on me than the photographs show (although it is just a tad wide). But it looks expensive and well-made and people always comment on it; the whole thing, pants and jacket, was like $85 on sale at Macy’s. Such a great deal.
I usually wear it with a bright colored cami - teal or pink or something to get a burst of color in - but I...

NYT article: Can a boy wear a skirt to school? →
Can a businessman wear a skirt suit to work? Today, I’m not so sure that would be acceptable… but ten or fifteen years from now… who knows? Many teenagers of Generation Z are blurring gender lines and dress code norms in schools all over the country. Boys are wearing skirts, girls tuxedos.
There was a day not too long ago when women did not, and in many cases, were not allowed to wear pants. ...

revitalize: things are meant to be used one way......
This can be as simple as using a necklace as a bracelet, something I’ve done many times, or perhaps a ring or earring as a pendant (especially relevant if you’ve lost one of the earrings, as The Kissters note in a recent blog post), or using a skirt or scarf as a top, etc.
Here, I’m using my gold belt as a statement piece that’s serving a function holding my scarf together...

stripping down to my cowboy boots
That’s not exactly what I mean. What I DO mean is that when you’re at work til 12:30 AM, the ventilation is no longer flowing like it is during the day, and there are only a few people left in the office, you tend to start stripping down all the extra things you would normally wear to work. For me last night, this happened to be the brown faux snakeskin pumps I rocked all day, the...

orange is the color of halloween
Which is why I wore this skirt on Friday. Yes, this outfit is a bit behind schedule but I really liked the twirly photo, so I wanted to include it.
So, I like how the outfit turned out in general (those tights are dark brown btw; the photo makes them look kinda weird), but I didn’t really have any shoes to go with the ensemble. First I tried on two different brown pointy toed heels but...

how to shop for and buy a winter coat
Winter coat shopping: fun or frustrating? Or both? The thing is, if you live in a cold climate like New York or a windy and cold one like my hometown of Chicago, you need a good, well-made winter coat to keep you warm when you’re commuting to and from the office and those can be hard to find.
Ann Taylor Loft, Banana, NY& Co., pretend to make winter coats. What they sell are really fall...

Great Scott Marty!
Next Saturday night, we’re sending you back to the future!
This costume was so fun and so cheap and because my boyfriend looks just a tad like Michael J. Fox, it worked fabulously! I love Halloween! What did you all dress up as?
